Saint Stephen's Day
Saint Stephen (sometimes spelled "Stephan") was the first martyr of Christianity and is venerated as a saint by Christians including Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox Churches. In Acts of the Apostles, Saint Stephen is identified as being one of the earliest deacons of the early Christian Church based in Jerusalem.
According to the story, Saint Stephen aroused the ire of the local religious authorities in the Holy Land by his teachings. The religious authorities arrested him and put him on trial for blasphemy. At his trial, Saint Stephen is reported to have made a very long speech denouncing these authorities. Nevertheless, Stephen was convicted, and after the trial, Saint Stephen died a martyr's death by being stoned to death.
Among the witnesses to Saint Stephen's death was Saul of Tarsus, who later converted to Christianity, took the name Paul, and becaming a leading figure in the early Church (Saint Paul has, for example, been attributed with writing up to 14 books in the New Testament).
Western Churches celebrate The Feast of Saint Stephen on December 26th (also known as Boxing Day in Commonwealth countries), which is also known as St. Stephen's Day, and referred to in the Christmas carol, "Good King Wenceslas".
