Guide 2 Christmas   >   Silent Night

Silent Night

"Silent Night" is a traditional Christmas Carol.

The original German lyrics of the song Stille Nacht were written by Austrian priest Josef Mohr. The original melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber, although the version of the melody that is usually sung today, does differ slightly from the original.

"Silent Night" has been translated into about 140 different languages (including into English by John Freeman Young in 1859), and is one of the most popular carols of all time.
  • Particularly noteable is the fact "Silent Night" was sung by French, British, and German troops during the Christmas Truce of 1914 as it was one of the few carols that soldiers on both sides knew.

  • "Silent Night" is also one of the best-selling records of all time. A version of "Silent Night" recorded by Bing Crosby is one of the very few singles to have sold more than 10 million copies!
Below are the lyrics for the English translation of "Silent Night" produced by John Freeman Young in 1859.

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright;
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from Heaven afar,
Heavenly Hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Saviour is born.
Christ the Saviour is born.

Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy Holy Face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy Birth.
Jesus, Lord, at Thy Birth.
