Yule

Yule Log
Yule (and Yuletide) is an archiac term for Christmas.
  • The word "Yule" is often heard in Christmas carols, as well as occasionally being seen on Christmas cards.

  • The word "Yule" stems from the Winter solstice celebration of ancient Germanic pagans. Not many details of the original Yule rituals are still known:

    • Yule was a time of feasting. A pig was sacrificed to the goddess Freyr, and then eaten. (the modern and Scandanavian tradition of eating a Christmas ham, and pork-based foods at christmas is believed to stem from this).

    • Yule also involved the burning of a Yule log. It was thought that the fire and smoke would drive away evil spirits.
