Christmas Ham
The Christmas ham is a traditional dish in Scandanavia.
- The Christmas ham tradition actually dates back to
pre-Christian times. In pre-Christian times,
a pig was sacrificed to the goddess Freyr at Yule.
- After the conversion of Scandinavia to Christianity, the eating of
ham at this time of year continued, and gradually became associated with
Christmas.
- The Christmas ham tradition has subsequently been adopted in many other countries,
including the United States of America.
- As well as eating a joint of ham, other dishes containing pork or ham are also often eaten
at Christmas. These include:
- The Christmas ham joint
- Bread dipped in pork fat
- Sausages - in many places, small sausages are served as a accompaniment to
Christmas dinner.
